Innovation Asset Collective (IAC) is a membership based not-for-profit organization designed to assist Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the data-driven clean technology sector to better leverage IP to grow and scale. Specifically, IAC assembles promising portfolios of patents, which are licensed to members to boost their patent portfolio and secure freedom to operate; IAC also educates, advises and helps members to develop their IP strategy. By securing freedom to operate, it allows members to spend more on R&D and less on licensing. This allows SMEs to be more competitive, acquire more customers, attract more funding, and scale quickly, which retains profits and skills in Canada. 

IAC was founded by three leading experts in IP, each of whom brings incredible experience and expertise in this area, Peter Cowan, Chris Wormald and Jim Hinton.  IAC is also supported by a board of directors, who are steeped in industry expertise and represent a geographical, gender and ethnic diversity.

VP IP Operations & Transactions

Purpose of Position

Reporting to the CEO, VP IP Operations & Transactions will lead IACs IP services, including creating and delivering a patent purchase program and licensing program that will maximize value for Canadian SMEs in the Clean-Tech space; leading a team to analyze and source IP; and define opportunities for licensing and acquisition in patent portfolios of IACs members. 

Key Interactions

CEOs or CTOs of SMEs in Clean-tech industry, IAC members, Government Institutions, Academic Institutions, Crown Corporations and Intermediaries such as Incubators, Accelerators and Partners, and Internal stakeholders.

Mission and Scope

Create and lead IACs IP Generation, Patent Acquisition & Licensing Strategy:

  • Define and operationalize IACs overall IP Acquisition & Licensing Strategy, ensuring such strategy will support IACs long term sustainability goals.
  • Define group acquisition needs and opportunities that will support FTO and provide real value to IACs members.
  • Deliver a licensing & patent management program that is streamlined and provides maximum value for the collective.
  • Create IAC relationships with key external IP owners.
  • Define group acquisition needs and opportunities that will support FTO and provide real value to IACs members.
  • Co-Ownership and execution of Membership Advisory Council.
  • Drawing on the team, lead the creation of a competitive landscape and key market trends that will serve as inputs for both IACs IP Acquisition & Licensing Strategy, and member Intelligence Reports.
  • Lead the team in analysis of patent portfolios to identify top acquisition candidates. Lead licensing or acquisition negotiations.

IP Consultation & Expertise

Drawing on detailed knowledge of relevant technologies and companies within the industry, advise IAC members on patent filings & approach in order to maximize value of investment.


  • Contribute to the formulation and execution of IACs vision, strategy and business objectives.
  • Working across teams to provide mentorship and leadership as required.
  • Lead a team of Patent Analysts and Experts, creating an environment of excellence.

Special Projects

·       As required by the CEO.

This position could include other duties as assigned, based on start-up needs of the company.

% Travel

Limited inter-provincial travel will be expected, and occasional cross-Canada travel as needed.

Required education and experience

Engineering degree

15+ years’ experience in the IP Industry with demonstrates results in growing IP based programs or teams.

10-15 years’ experience managing or leading teams on defining licensing programs for IP owners

10-15 years’ experience managing or leading teams on IP intelligence / landscape report programs

10-15 years’ experience managing or leading teams on patent transaction programs

Experience supporting organizations to assess and protect their IP

Experience in strategy development

Desirable education and experience

Masters or MBA

Experience in creating Prior Art libraries is desirable

This is a one-year contract position with the potential for extension or renewal.
