sPower is an established and rapidly growing renewable energy company headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT with additional offices in San Francisco, Long Beach, and Richmond. sPower’s Engineering team is responsible for the company’s evaluation and development of wind, solar, and energy storage technologies that are technically sound and represent state of the art, the development of cost estimations for both construction and O&M operation and the development of specifications, designs, and integration of energy storage to both new and existing projects.
The right person is expected to play a critical role at the center of a rapidly growing renewable energy company. Recent significant and direct engineering experience with renewable and/or energy storage is a requirement. You should enjoy working independently and creatively, as well as with the engineering and project origination teams.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities
The Project Engineer will be expected to support multiple projects, in a team environment, in various renewable disciplines (solar, energy storage, wind). The Project Engineer will be assigned early in project development and will carry the project through all stages of the project lifecycle (origination, development, construction, and operation).
Subject matter expert in renewable energy generation, with knowledge of critical issues to be addressed for design and operations
Provide technical guidance for project evaluation, permitting, power purchase agreements, interconnect agreements, financial modeling, and other project development aspects.
Perform site visits to assess and analyze potential solar / energy storage projects.
Develop renewable project layouts and designs, from concept to 30% design
Development of project/equipment specifications for project level construction/operations cost estimates, and RFP support for EPC contractors and equipment vendors.
Evaluate technology vendors for renewable energy market leaders with respect to near term and 2nd/3rd generation technology to support the technical design and implementation of sPower projects and schedules.
Review, comment and approve engineering studies including Load Flow, Arc Flash, Short Circuit, Heat Ampacity Calculations, Coordination Studies, Grounding Studies, Geotechnical Studies, Hydrology Studies, etc.
Support Projects In Development, Construction And Operation
Manage internal engineering design process at the project level.
Manage third party engineering consultants including managing RFI process.
Review, understand and manage offtake and interconnection requirements.
Oversee all technical aspects of assigned projects (e.g. resource, plant design, buildability, high voltage, EPC exhibits, coordination with estimating, etc) and manage the budget for these items.
Provide engineering review and approval of construction specifications and detailed design.
Ensure the project is adhering to project specifications.
Provide design review and advise on any issues that appear technically incorrect or inconsistent with project documentation.
Provide QC observations of the work and schedule adherence of the contractor.
Support project commissioning and testing activities for compliance with contractual COD and interconnection requirements.
Substantial interaction with the many different sPower teams that are critical for a project (strategic development, land, origination, structured finance, etc.)
Desired Skills, Expertise And Competencies
5-7 years of design and field experience (Utility?Scale Solar, Wind, and/or Energy Storage)
Exceptional organizational, communication (verbal and written), decision making/problem solving, analytical and time management skills
Project and case management skills including a strong aptitude for managing and prioritizing multiple projects and deadlines, including contract management
Preference is given to candidates with experience in seeing projects through development, 3rd party finance and construction.
Familiarity with electrical engineering design requirements in the utility scale solar energy, wind energy, and battery energy storage
Subject matter expertise in integration with renewable and dispatchable energy sources, augmentation strategies, SCADA and grid integration controls
Knowledge of battery technologies for utility scale energy storage projects
Willingness to travel (10 to 20% of time) with some overnight stays required
High degree of self-motivation
Motivated by team accomplishments and advancement in the industry
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CAD systems
BS degree in engineering required, EE or other related engineering discipline, MS preferred
